Cascades Futurity

Cutting cattle out of a herd is an age-old skill that is a necessity for any cowboy, and it’s been described as a “battle of wills between a horse and a cow.”

Those skills are on display for the next 10 days at the Cascades Futurity, a cutting horse competition at the Deschutes County Fairgrounds.

Central Oregon Daily videographer Matt Pugerude went to the fairgrounds to capture the sights and sounds of this uniquely western event.

From the Farm to Your Beer

The secret to your favorite flavors of beer is inside the hop plant, and Oregon is the second-largest hop-producing state in the country. Last year alone, more than ten million pounds of hops, worth more than 34 million dollars were harvested across the state, mostly in the Willamette Valley, but as Central Oregon Daily photojournalist Matt Pugerude shows us, Cascade Hop Farm in Redmond is adding its fair share to those numbers this year during harvest week.
