Dirksen Derby, still going strong

Central Oregon Daily’s Chris Biggs reports on the weekend’s Dirksen Derby events at Mt. Batchelor and checks in the Tyler Eklund, the young snowboarder who inspired the event.

When Pro Snowboarder Josh Dirksen heard about up and coming snowboarder, Tyler Eklund’s, tragic snowboarding accident that left him paralyzed from the neck down, he and the community rallied around Eklund and decided to start an event to raise money so that he could continue to do what he loves best –
getting that pow! That event is the Dirksen Derby, which features snowboarding, split skiing and sit skiing competitions and tons of evening events and after parties in Bend. Both the Dirksen Derby and Eklund have been going strong for a decade now. Eklund will be riding Mt Bachelor this Sunday at the Dirksen Derby 10. Here’s a look at how Eklund continues to live life to the fullest.
