The Dirty Dozen and Clean Fifteen

Each year the Environmental Working Group, a non-profit focusing on human and environmental health, complies a list of the produce containing the most of least amount of residual pesticides and for the third year in a row strawberries top of the list of the most pesticide covered produce.

According to the study a third of all strawberry samples had at least 10 pesticides on them and one sample found as many as 22 residual pesticides on them.

Following strawberries was spinach with 97 percent of samples contained pesticides residue.

However, the group also lists the least contaminated produce or the “clean fifteen.”  All except for one percent of avocado and sweet corn samples contained pesticides.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency released a statement saying that produce today is “safer than ever” and the Alliance for Food and Farming called the study “unsupportable.” USDA and U.S. Food and Drug Administration data shows that 99 percent of residues detected are under the levels deemed safe by the Environmental Protection Agency.
