Saying Goodbye to Local War Veteran

Lawrence ‘Red’ Zufelt entered WWII before he graduated from high school. By the time his naval career was over, he had survived one of the war’s biggest battles, witnessed the bombing of Hiroshima, and continued serving through the Korean and Vietnam Wars.

Red passed away last week at the age of 90 in his home in Bend.

Friends and family paid tribute to him at a graveside service Wednesday, and Central Oregon Daily’s Warren Shultz was there.

War Stories: Ronald Hicks

Every Monday night, we tell the story of a Central Oregon veteran in our War Stories series. One of the Bend Band of Brothers, Lyle Hicks, has been instrumental in introducing us to so many of the veterans we have met, that we asked him whose story he would like to see on this Memorial Day, and he chose his father, Ronald.

We debut the new War Stories segment on longtime La Pine resident Ronald Hicks, a Navy veteran who played a role in many major battles in the Pacific during World War II.
